Meet the face behind the art

My work often tackles themes of, space, light, material manipulation and present-ness. My use of installations produces an empowered and participatory atmosphere for the viewer. The manipulation of light is one of my main materials, I like to discover how artificial light and natural light work. I also like to see how the differences between the two different light affect the viewer. The main inspiration that have influenced me are the artists Olafur Eliasson and James Turrell, their use of space, present-ness and light all merge together within their practices. Through the use of light, I like to use holes in material as light shined through the holes, creating hundreds of streams of coloured light which protrudes on the viewer. The colours I normally utilised are bright and powerful, including marine blue and warm bright light, the intensity of the light changes how the main structure of the holes look. The structures in the installations are usually made from paper or fabric with hundreds of holes stabbed, burned, punched, and carved out, this creates a cluster of different patterns on the surface, giving the light new apertures to shine through.

Outside of my Undergraduate Degree:

Volunteering at Converge on a multimedia art course - I volunteered for a year on a university course designed to educate and increase skill and independence for the general public who experience or who have experienced mental health difficulties. This course was a great opportunity for me as it gave me personal experience teaching and leading classes and helping alongside another volunteer teacher.

Winner of an international competition the Eleanor Worthington Prize 2020 - another student and I on our course entered into the Eleanor Worthington competition. The competition accepts entries from all colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and Italy. The theme of that year (2020) was the Inclusion of Disabilities with the work of Raphael's artworks. The Renaissance painter influenced our work by the colours used and by the twisted torso of our sculpture.

You can find out more about our sculpture, including an audio description, videos and photos of the piece, and a written description.
